A Dominant Outing

Early Runs Key
San Diego got on the board early, plating three runs in the first inning against Rockies starter Jon Gray. A bases-loaded walk to Josh Bell and an RBI single from Fernando Tatis Jr. did the trick, giving the Padres a lead they would never relinquish. The hosts added another run in the second, with Wil Myers driving in Eric Hosmer on a fielder's choice. From there, Pivetta took over, retiring 14 of the next 15 batters faced before issuing a two-out walk to Charlie Blackmon in the sixth.
Clutch Hitting
Tatis and Pham's homers provided some much-needed insurance runs for San Diego, which had been struggling to score with runners in scoring position. The duo's long balls marked just the second time this season the Padres have hit multiple home runs with two outs. "We've been working on those situations," Machado said of the team's improved clutch hitting. "We know we're going to be put in tough spots, and we need to come through." The win was San Diego's third straight over the Rockies, who have now lost four consecutive games overall. Colorado has dropped 12 of its last 15 meetings with the Padres.
